Happy Groundhog Day!

Happy Groundhog Day from the resident groundhog in my parents’ backyard! The cute little animal makes an appearance every few weeks or so. When it does, my Mom sends a welcome flurry of fun photos. She took these last fall. No word yet as to if the groundhog appeared today, much less saw its shadow!

The groundhog picked a beautiful fall day to emerge from its burrow.

Groundhog Day is a North American tradition observed annually on February 2. It is based on the superstition – brought by a group of German immigrants whose descendants are known as the Pennsylvania Dutch – that if the groundhog emerges from its burrow on that day and sees its shadow, winter will endure for another six weeks. And if the shadow is absent, an early spring is heralded.

One of the most beloved Groundhog Day celebrations takes place in Pennsylvania, USA where groundhog Punxsutawney Phil emerges (or rather is extracted!) from his burrow to provide a much anticipated weather forecast before a throng of onlookers and media. And how accurate have Phil’s forecasts been? Data collected by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) indicates that over a ten-year period from 2016 to 2025, Phil was right just 30% of the time. Regardless of whether the superstition is true, the groundhog is a welcome friend whenever it appears!

Groundhogs are also known as woodchucks and belong to the Sciuridae family of rodents. Included in the Sciuridae family are prairie dogs, squirrels, and marmots, among others.
What a cute little tail!

I enjoy blogging about my two favorite pursuits in life, figure skating (as a woman who returned to it in her 40s!) and travel. My travel entries are from various locales around the globe, including Croatia, a country where I have family.

    1. Thanks, Jo! It is indeed a beautiful creature. And it’s sad because some people call the exterminator when groundhogs show up in their yard. Thankfully, my parents have not! It’s so fun to watch for it to appear.

  1. That groundhog is very adorable! Love how it’s lounging on the bench. I couldn’t help but laugh at how Phil was right only 30% of the time and yet they keep going with these forecasts. I guess all you have to do is expect the opposite of what the groundhog predicts!

  2. Groundhogs are such endearing creatures. You gotta love their plump, “rooly-poly” appearance. Are you watching and enjoying the Winter Olympics? I just watched French duo Laurence Fournier Beaudry and Guillaume Cizeron defeat three-time reigning world champions Madison Chock and Evan Bates to win Olympic gold. I was very much in awe watching all the aerial acrobatics, speed and how skaters maintain perfect balance while performing. Thanks for sharing, and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

    1. Thank you, Aiva! Yes, I enjoyed watching the Winter Olympics and the figure skating events in particular. While some of the outcomes were unpredictable, all of the performances were breathtaking and the finishes well earned. It takes a special kind of courage to compete at that level, for sure. That is what makes the Olympics unique. Here’s to the next four years⛸️

      1. I am glad to hear that you enjoyed watching the Winter Olympics. I loved it too because it is quite amazing to watch sports that rarely get mainstream coverage, such as biathlon, bobsled, skeleton, and curling. It also offers a unique aesthetic—snow-covered mountains, icy tracks, and breathtaking drone footage—that often feels more visually immersive than summer events. Take care xx
